Brazilian integrated steelmaker Gerdau has invested $182 million to build a high-tension power plant in the Argentinian city of Perez, in the province of Santa Fe, as a way to supply electricity to its recycling and steelmaking Perez mill, according to Gerdau and Argentinian officials sources.

The power plant facility is part of a partnership between Gerdau and Empresa Provincial de la Energia del Gobierno de Santa Fe (EPE), a Santa Fe state-run energy facility. The project includes a high-tension power plant of 220 kV as well as a transforming facility, according to the Argentinian government.

Gerdau will use the power facility to supply electricity to its Perez mill’s electric arc furnace (EAF). The plant will be conveniently located near an energy transmission distribution center in the region of Rosario, with a 5.9-kilometer (3.6-mile) extension.

Both the high-tension transmission line as well as the transforming facility will be operated and maintained by EPE, while specific equipment to operate the Perez mill will be run by Gerdau.
