Gerdau Acominas, the Gerdau Group's largest mill, has laid off 300 workers over the past two months, according to a recent report from Brazil's Metallurgy Union of Ouro Branco y Congonhas.

The Sao Paulo, Brazil-based mill cut 300 blue and white collar jobs over the last two months, the report said. Furthermore, 1,200 jobs from companies indirectly servicing the steel industry were also eliminated in Brazil during this time period, said the Metallurgy Union’s spokesman Afranio Guedes Filho.

Since October 2008, Gerdau Acominas has laid off a total of 500 workers. Gerdau said the job cuts were due to the weakened demand caused by the economic meltdown.
