Crude steel output at Venezuelan state-run steelmaker Sidor in 2016 totaled 307,783 mt, the company’s lowest level since 2007, according to media reports.

The company’s crude steel output in 2016 didn’t reach 10 percent of its total capacity, which is about 5.1 million mt/year.

In 2015, Sidor produced 1.06 million mt of crude steel. The company’s peak production level was reached in 2007, when it produced 4.30 million mt of crude steel.

Sidor’s sharp drop in crude steel production in 2016 resulted from a halt in the company’s activities last year, which lasted about five months, caused by a crisis in the country’s electric system.

Sidor’s tinplate production total was close to zero, according to media reports. Venezuela needed to import tinplate to supply its can-processing industry.
