Full-year 2017 US steel import totals show 15.1 percent increase year-on-year

According to preliminary census data from the US Department of Commerce, full-year US steel imports in 2017 increased 15.1 percent from 2016 (census data) to total 34,468,343 mt. In terms of value, US steel imports in 2017 totaled $29.12 billion, up 30.9 percent from the $22.25 billion in 2016.

According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the finished steel import market share for the full-year 2017 was an estimated 27 percent.

Top sources for US steel imports in 2017 include: Canada, with 5,675,815 mt; Brazil, with 4,665,425 mt; Korea, with 3,401,394 mt; Mexico, with 3,155,116 mt; and Russia, with 2,866,694 mt.

Major steel products imported in 2017 include blooms, billets and slab at a combined 7,532,289 mt; HDG sheets and strip, at 3,103,635 mt; OCTG, at 3,084,567 mt; CRC, at 2,349,234 mt; line pipe, at 2,011,599 mt; and HRC, at 1,919,229 mt.
