Fiat started lay offs with 5’600 workers

Under the framework of the industry plan announced last month, Italian automotive company FIAT has initiated the layoffs by dimissing 5'600 workers today from its Torino, Arese, Termini Imerese and Cassino plants. The plan, opposed by the trade union is coming into effect after thea adujtment requested by the Government are carried out. The only change in the plan is the commitment by the company to restart the facilities of Termini Imerese and Arese plants after 8 months following the closure in 2003. The layoffs will reach 8'100 workers by the end of July 2003. Only half of the dismissed workers will be return to their jobs in 2 years. 80% of the dismised workers' wages will be financed by the Government.
