Evraz commissions new slab caster

Russia's largest steelmaker, Evraz Group SA, commissioned a 2.5 million metric ton annual capacity double-strand slab continuous caster at its West Siberian Iron and Steel Plant (ZapSib). With the new slab caster, the group plans to produce semi-finished goods through an automated process that reduces both energy consumption and air pollution. The company will use the produced slab as feedstock for its flat production. Alexander Abramov, Evraz Group Chairman and CEO, said, “Commissioning of the new continuous caster at ZapSib is a demonstration of the Company's stated strategy to become one of the most efficient steel making groups in the world. Evraz Group is one of the world's leading vertically integrated steel production and mining businesses. While it operates mainly within Russia, the company has been active in expansion abroad. Palini e Bertoli in Italy and Vitkovice Steel in the Czech Republic is the group's most recent acquisition.
