Euro area industrial output down 0.9 percent in December from November

In December last year, seasonally-adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.9 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU-28, as compared with November. Industrial production in November had declined by 1.7 percent in the euro area and by 1.2 percent in the EU-28, on month-on-month basis. In December last year compared with December 2017, industrial production fell by 4.2 percent in the euro area and by 2.7 percent in the EU-28. These figures are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Union.

As compared to November, in December last year the production of capital goods fell by 1.5 percent in the euro area and by 1.2 percent in the EU-28, while the production of non-durable consumer goods decreased by 1.5 percent in the euro area and by 0.2 percent in the EU-28. In December last year, the production of energy was down by 0.4 percent in the euro area and up by 0.4 percent in the EU-28, and the production of durable goods rose by 0.7 percent in the euro area and by 0.1 percent in the EU-28, all month on month. Meanwhile, the production of intermediate goods remained unchanged both in the euro area and in the EU-28, month on month.

Among the member states, in December the highest month-on-month increases were registered in Denmark (11.6%), Luxembourg (3.5%), and Latvia (3.3%), and the highest decreases in Ireland (13.4%), Malta (5.2%) and the Netherlands (3.2%).

As compared to the same month of 2017, in December 2018 production of energy decreased by 4.2 percent in the euro area and declined by 1.5 percent in the EU-28. In the same month, production of intermediate goods fell by four percent in the euro area and by 3.2 percent in the EU-28, and production of capital goods moved down by 5.5 percent in the euro area and by 4.2 percent in the EU-28, all year on year. In December last year, production of non-durable consumer goods fell by 1.8 percent in the euro area and by 0.2 percent in the EU-28 and production of durable consumer goods was down by 4.4 percent in the euro area and by 2.9 percent in the EU-28, all year-on-year basis.

Among the member states for which data are available, in December the largest year-on-year decreases in industrial production were registered in Ireland (19.8%), Spain (6.7%), and Crotia (6.6%), while the highest increases were observed in Denmark (14.3%), Hungary (5.8%) and Estonia (5.7%).
