Euro area annual inflation down to -0.6 percent in January

Annual inflation in the euro area was -0.6 percent in January this year, down from -0.2 percent in December 2014, according to a report released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. In January 2014, the annual inflation rate was 0.8 percent.

Meanwhile, in the European Union (EU-28) annual inflation was -0.5 percent in January, down from -0.1 percent in December. In January 2014, the annual inflation rate in the EU-28 was 0.9 percent.

In January this year, annual inflation in the EU-28 fell in 23 states and increased in five states as compared with December. The lowest annual inflation rates were observed in Greece (-2.8%) and Bulgaria (-2.3%), while the highest were observed in Malta (0.8%) and Austria and Romania (both 0.5%).
