EU new passenger car registrations down 38.5 percent in Jan-Apr

In April this year, new car registrations totaled 270,682 units in the European Union (EU), decreasing by 76.3 percent compared to 1,143,046 units in April 2019, according to the latest figures issued by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA).

All 27 EU markets posted double-digit decreases in April, but the largest year-on-year decreases were recorded in Italy and Spain, with registrations falling by 97.6 percent and 96.5 percent, respectively. Demand in France (88.8%) and Germany (61.1%) also declined, year on year.

Meanwhile, in the first four months, new passenger car registrations in the EU decreased to 2.75 million units, down 38.5 percent year on year due to the negative impact of the coronavirus on the March and April results. Registrations declined in Italy (50.7%), Spain (48.9%) and France (48.0%) compared with the same period in 2019, while registrations in the German market fell by 31 percent year on year in the given period.
