Another 95 hourly workers at Canada-based Essar Steel Algoma, a subsidiary of India's Essar Steel, have been placed on temporary layoff, according to Brenda Stenta, the company's manager of corporate communications.

Stating that this figure brings the total on layoff to about 600, Ms Stenta added, "The work-share program remains in effect for salaried personnel."

In order to ensure the company's long-term viability, Essar Steel Algoma has been adjusting its workforce to fit production since the market entered a declining trend late last year.

Before demand and production levels dropped significantly, Essar Steel Algoma employed more than 3,000 hourly workers.
