Brazilian mining agency, ANM, said 14 dams that did not have a stability certificate are now active after sending the missing document. ANM said there were 54 dams in Brazil that did not file for the stability certificate and, as a result, had their activities halted.
In Brazil, miners send their stability certificate twice a year. Companies are responsible for issuing their own stability certificates. At first, the miner issues and states whether a dam is safe or not. Then, the miner needs to hire an external auditor to attest the safety of the structure. If a miner fails to send the stability certificate, the dam is halted, and the company must pay a fine.
ANM said there are 421 dams in Brazil that must send their stability certificates each year. Minas Gerais state has the most halted dams at 27, ANM said.
