At a joint press conference held on January 19 by Egyptian Minister of Foreign Trade and Industry Rachid Mohamed Rachid and Turkish Industry and Trade Minister Nihat Ergun, Mr. Rachid said that they "are looking at all legal procedures", in response to a question on whether Egypt is considering taking antidumping measures against Turkish steel exports to the country.
As SteelOrbis previously reported, Egypt is assessing the complaints of local steelmakers against imports of Turkish steel.
In 2009, Turkey's steel product exports to Egypt amounted to 2.93 million metric tons, increasing by 7.63 times year on year, according to the statistics released by the Istanbul Mineral and Metals Exporters' Association (IMMIB).
However, commenting on the issue, general secretary of the Turkish Steel Producers' Association, Veysel Yayan, had told SteelOrbis that the increase in Turkish steel exports to Egypt resulted from the high demand in Egypt and from Egyptian consumers' choice of Turkish steel products, rather than Turkey's focus on the country.
