The earthquake that hit Chile in the early hours of February 27 has seriously affected the premises of Compañía Siderúrgica Huachipato S.A., located at the harbor of San Vicente, Talcahuano, VIII Region, paralyzing its activities. The most damaged areas in the plant are the port and the primary production sector which includes the coke plant, blast furnaces, steel shop and auxiliary elements.

Although the areas of continuous casting lines and rolling mills were also damaged, those were of less magnitude. According to a company press release, the damage evaluation process continues.  In the immediate, it is impossible to precisely determine the global impact of what happened.

With the information currently available CAP S.A. believes that the repair work necessary to normalize steel production will take no less than three months. If possible, rolling operations will be partially restarted in a shorter period of time by using existing inventory of semi finished products and eventually by imports.

CAP Acero is coordinating with its customers ways and means to achieve a normal supply of steel to the Chilean market.
