According to media reports, Netherlands-based wire rod producer Van Merksteijn announced that it suspended the construction of its new integrated, environment friendly wire rod mill at Eemshaven in the northern Netherlands due to rapidly changing circumstances in the last six months, the current situation of the investments in Netherlands and the substantial economic uncertainties that lie ahead.

The new mill at Eemshaven was supposed to bring 300 job opportunities if it would come into operation and Van Merksteijn has announced that it would invest €300 million in this project.

The company said in particular that the uncertainties that lie ahead consists of obtaining the necessary permits after nitrogen emission issues, possible carbon dioxide taxes, the ongoing global trade war and the European Commission’s decisions regarding measures for wire rod imports.

When the mill eventually will be built, is momentarily unclear, but the company expects a delay of at least one year.
