Demand for construction in Turkey decreases in Jan-Sept

The data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) on December 4, based on the construction permits issued by local authorities in Turkey, show that in the first nine months of 2009 the new floor area, the number of new buildings, the value of new buildings and the number of new dwelling units in the country decreased by 19.6 percent, 14.8 percent, 25.1 percent and 17.2 percent respectively, all compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.

Meanwhile, in the first nine months of 2009, based on construction permits issued, the number of new residential buildings fell by 14.1 percent year on year to 52,768, down from 61,395 in the January-September 2008. Also in the period in question, the floor area of new residential buildings declined by 15.1 percent to 48,833,991 m2, from 57,537,060 m2 in the corresponding period of 2008.
