The Russian steel producer Mechel has announced the conclusion of an agreement with Italian company Danieli to provide for the modernization of Mechel's steel facilities.

The agreement, which was signed during the official visit of Danieli's representatives to Mechel, includes the re-equipment of Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant's (CMP) electric arc furnace No. 6 with fundamental modernization of its continuous caster to multiply its productivity by 3.5-4-fold, to 1.2 million mt of slabs annually. In addition, the commissioning of a ladle furnace and a vacuum vessel are also included in the terms of the agreement between the two companies.

The implementation of the projects will allow Mechel to substantially increase its steel outputs, including those of stainless and construction steel products, with decreased primary costs of production and increased quality.

The companies are also considering joint work in the reconstruction of steel melting and rolling production.
