Cyclone Fani is expected to reach the coasts of Odisha, India on May 3, 2019. With landfall wind speeds of up to 200 kpm, it has been identified as an ”extremely severe cyclonic storm” that is expected to affect the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal on the eastern side of India.
According to media reports, flights are being grounded and about 223 trains along the Odisha coastline in the essential Kolkata-Chennai route have been canceled. India has activated various emergency measures to evacuate over 800,000 people and alerted search and rescue divisions.
Various mining entities and steel plants are located in the state of Odisha. Education sites and many private firms are reportedly closing for 3-4 days in anticipation of the cyclone effects.
Odisha is the largest producer of iron ore in India with approximately 111.3 million mt in FY 2019, 55 percent of the total iron ore produced in the country in the period.
