Brazilian steelmaker Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (CSN) said this week it will expand flat steel production for the 2019-2023 period, with an investment of BRL 1.3 billion in several steelmaking projects.
The company said it is evaluating several “strategic options” for increasing coated steel production, including a new galvanizing line, expanding existing pre-painted steel production, and galvalume output.
CSN did not release specific flat steel output target volumes nor a specific timeline for completing the proposed projects. The company said the forecasted BRL 1.3 billion investment should also include the revamp of blast furnaces, while also driving down costs.
CSN said the rebound of Brazil’s steel sector after years of meltdown is paying off. The company’s steel sales volumes for Q1-Q3 2018 totaled 5.1 million mt, compared to 4.9 million mt in the full year of 2017.
