Coal exports from the Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) terminals based at Port of Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, totaled 9.5 million mt in April this year, rising by 15.4 percent compared to March, according to the company's announcement. 13 percent of the total coal handled at the terminals was coking coal.
In the first four months of the year, coking coal exports constituted 17 percent of total coal exports of 35.7 million mt from PWCS, with the overall volume up 4.8 percent compared to the same period last year.
According to the released information, Japan was the largest export destination for coal shipments from PWCS in the first four months of the year, with shipments to Japan constituting 52.4 percent of the total shipments, while coal exports to China made up 19.25 percent of the total.
