Dong Lin, general director of Chongqing-based Chinese steelmaker Chongqing Iron and Steel Group (Chongqing Steel), has stated that the group is currently building China's largest shipbuilding steel production base.
In the first half year of 2010, Chongqing Steel's shipbuilding steel facility in Dadukou was relocated to Changshou New District, idling 1.2 million mt of production capacities. Stage 1 of the facilities in the new location will start production operations in June 2011 as scheduled, with a designed annual output capacity of 6.5 million mt.
The company said that, with the relocation of the shipbuilding steel facilities, it will cut emissions of carbon dioxide by 15,600 mt per year, while it will reduce waste water discharge by 13.52 million mt of per year.
Mr. Dong said that in 2008 Chongqing Steel produced 1 million mt of shipbuilding plate, ranking 11th in China in terms of output. In 2010, due to the commissioning of its new 4,100 mm heavy plate production line, Chongqing Steel's total output of shipbuilding plate is expected to rank third in China. In 2011, the steelmaker's new facility is expected to become the country's largest shipbuilding steel production base in terms of output, Mr. Dong stated.
