China’s coal consumption totaled 3.87 billion mt in 2018 and is expected to increase slightly in 2019, as announced by the China Coal Industry Association in its Annual Report on the Development of the Coal Industry in 2018.

According to the report, in 2018 the Chinese steel industry consumed 620 million mt of coal, the domestic power supply industry consumed 2.1 billion mt of coal, the building materials industry consumed 500 million mt, while the chemical industry used 280 million mt.

As 2019, China’s economic development will maintain steady growth, which will provide support for energy consumption. However, at the same time China will implement strict environmental protection measures to ensure good air quality, which will likely limit the growth of coal consumption.
