China’s shipbuilding output up 20.9 percent in 2017

In 2017, the aggregate shipbuilding output in China amounted to 42.68 million dead weight tons (dwt), up 20.9 percent year on year, as announced by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI). In the given period, China’s new ship orders amounted to 33.73 million dwt, increasing by 60.1 percent year on year. As of the end of the year in question, ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 87.23 million dwt, down 12.4 percent compared to the end of 2016.

In 2017, the industrial concentration of the Chinese shipbuilding sector has improved, with the top ten shipbuilding producers’ shipbuilding output accounting for 58.3 percent of the national shipbuilding output, up 1.4 percentage points compared to 2016.
