In the January-March period this year, the aggregate shipbuilding output in China amounted to 8.53 million dead weight tons (dwt), down 45.9 percent year on year, as announced by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI). In the given period, China’s new ship orders amounted to 15.53 million dwt, increasing by 180 percent year on year. As of the end of March, ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 93.69 million dwt, up 5.7 percent year on year and increasing by 7.4 percent compared to the end of 2017.
In the January-March period this year, the aggregate shipbuilding output for export orders in China totaled 7.82 million dead weight tons (dwt), down 47.5 percent year on year and accounting for 91.7 percent of the total shipbuilding output in China in the given period. Meanwhile, China’s new ship export orders in the period in question amounted to 14.40 million dwt, increasing by 214 percent year on year and constituting 92.7 percent of total new ship orders. As of the end of March, ship export orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 84.88 million dwt, up 3.8 percent year on year and constituting 90.6 percent of total ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises.
