In the January-May period this year, the aggregate shipbuilding output in China amounted to 16.43 million dead weight tons (dwt), down 28.3 percent year on year, as announced by the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry (CANSI). In the given period, China’s new ship orders amounted to 19.68 million dwt, increasing by 99.6 percent year on year. As of the end of May, ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 89.03 million dwt, up 7.5 percent year on year and increasing by 2.1 percent compared to the end of 2017.
In the January-May period this year, the aggregate shipbuilding output for export orders in China totaled 15.48 million dead weight tons (dwt), down 28.2 percent year on year and accounting for 94.2 percent of the total shipbuilding output in China in the given period. Meanwhile, China’s new ship export orders in the period in question amounted to 18.34 million dwt, increasing by 108 percent year on year and constituting 93.2 percent of total new ship orders. As of the end of May, ship export orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises totaled 80.04 million dwt, up 1.5 percent year on year and constituting 89.9 percent of total ship orders on the books of Chinese shipbuilding enterprises.
