China's May crude steel output hits 41.3 million mt

The latest figures issued by China's National Bureau of Statistics show that the country's total steel industry production for May 2007 came to 39.55 million mt of pig iron, 41.3 million mt of crude steel, and 47.51 million mt of finished steel, up 14.7 percent, 15.7 percent and 19.6 percent respectively year on year. Of these data, the growth in crude steel output saw a further slowdown compared with the previous month, with daily production reaching 1.3323 million mt - the lowest level of the past three months.

In the Jan-May 2007 period, China's total crude steel output reached 195.62 million mt, up 20 percent year on year. This growth is lower than the 21.2 percent production growth figure for Jan-April 2007. Meanwhile, total finished steel production for Jan-May jumped 23.9 percent to 219.0944 million mt, lower than the 24.4 percent growth registered for the first four months of the year.
