Chile’s iron ore production could jump 180 percent by 2025, from 17.1 million mt/year to 48 million mt/year, an executive said.
According to Sergio Hernandez, vice president of Cochilco, production could jump to 48 million mt/year thanks to some $4.5 million that are expected be invested in the country by the next decade.
The executive also noted that iron ore production in Chile increased 114 percent between 2004 and 2013 from 8 million mt/year to 17.1 million mt/year iron ore production.
The executive said the greatest impact in the iron ore segment comes from the Dominga project, from producer Andes Iron. According to Hernandez, it’s a large-scale production project, which is expected to take place by 2018.
Other project that should also add capacity to the country’s existing iron ore output is Capstone Mining’s project in the Atacama region.
Also known the as Santo Domingo project, it should add about 4.2 million mt/year capacity.
