Chile considers implementing safeguard measures

Chilean mills push for bringing safeguard measures to almost all steel products imported to the country. Chilean annual flat product consumption is approximately 2 million tons, 25% of which is imported. The annual long product consumption is 300.000tons, 10% of which is again imported. Currently Chile applies tariffs of 7% to the imports from outside Mercosul and 1% from Mercosul. As a result of the investigations initiated at the request of local mills, the Chilean government will decide on June 25, 2002 whether to implement safeguard measures to steel imports into the country.
