Canadian iron ore shipments in January
The mining industry of
Canada sold 2.38 million dmt (dry-weight metric tons) of
iron ore in January 2005, an increase of nearly 20% from 1.99 million dmt in January 2004.
The country exported 90% (2.14 million dmt) of its total shipment. Exports rose 11% year on year, while domestic shipments almost quadruped to 236'144 dmt.
The combined total
production (1.2 million dmt) of Newfoundland and Labrador was all sent abroad. Quebec extracted 1.07 million dmt of ore, 78% of which was exported and 22 % destined to Canadian consumers.
The mines' January 2005 month end stocks, excluding crude ore, reached 3.56 million dmt. For comparison, the stocks at the end of January 2004 totaled 4.4 million dmt.
