Canada tariff investigation underway

Canada's foray into whether steel tariffs are the cause of injury to the steel industry won't yield results until September or the latest October, 2002 according to executives of The Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT). The CITT is in the beginning stages of its investigation which will cover hot rolled, cold rolled and coated flat products, some long products (including rebar, merchant bar, light and intermediate structurals). It will also cover welded and seamless tubes. Tin mill products are not currently included in the investigation. An analysis will be done on whether an increase in imports since 1996 has been a major cause of “serious injury.” Executives expect findings to be issued on July 4 and a report sent to the government by August 19.
