Brazilian crude steel production increases 14.5 percent in July

Brazilian crude steel output in July rose 14.5 percent, year-over-year, to 3 million mt, the local steel association, IABr, said this week.

Domestic steel sales in July grew 11.2 percent, year-over-year, to 2 million mt. Apparent steel consumption in July totaled 2.4 million mt, 23.9 percent up, year-over-year.

Brazilian steel exports in July reached 978,000 mt in volume, 11.8 percent up, year-over-year, and $872 million in value, 122.6 percent up, also on a year-over-year basis. Steel imports in July totaled 512,000 mt in volume, 250.7 percent up, year-over-year, and $481 million in value, 182.5 percent up, year-over-year.

As for the accumulated period of January to July this year, Brazilian crude steel output reached 21 million mt, 22 percent up, year-over-year. Domestic steel sales in the January-July period improved 38.4 percent, year-over-year, to 14.1 million mt. Apparent steel consumption in January-July was 16.4 million mt, 44.9 percent up, year-over-year.

Brazilian steel exports in January-July totaled 6.2 million mt in volume, 10.5 percent down, year-over-year, however, steel exports in the same period reached $4.7 billion in value, 39.2 percent up, year-over-year.

Brazilian steel imports in January-July reached 3 million mt in volume, 154 percent up, year-over-year. In terms of value, Brazilian steel imports in the same period totaled $2.8 billion, 115.8 percent up, also on a year-over-year basis.
