Brazil retaliates against U.S. after slab quota squabble

Brazil is retaliating against the U.S. at the WTO over a squabble on its slab quota. Brazil had requested the U.S. increase its current slab quota of 2.5mt/y to an additional 800,000mt/y of low carbon steel grades not normally produced in the U.S. under Section 201 safeguards. In addition, Brazil also requested an increase of 700,000mt/y for its Rio de Janeiro-based CSN to supply its U.S. subsidiary U.S. LLC, formerly Heartland Steel. Brazil has plans to seek formal consultations with the U.S. under the WTO dispute process
