In the past five years Baosteel has produced over 70,000 mt of steel wires for use as bridge cables, which have been applied in over 20 bridge projects at home and abroad, the company has stated.
Many cities located along the Yangtze River in China have built long-span cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges. According to the forecasts of the relevant government authorities, by 2010 more than 100 bridges will be built over the Yangtze River mainstream alone.
In 2004, Baosteel won the supply contract for the Zhoushan Xihoumen sea-crossing bridge - China's largest and the world's second largest suspension bridge - producing and applying galvanized steel wires of 1770Mpa tensile strength in large bridge construction for the first time. In 2005, Baosteel won the supply contract for all cable-use galvanized steel wires for the Sutong Yangtze Bridge, the longest single-span cable-suspension bridge in the world.
From 2007 up to the present, Baosteel has been appointed as supplier of cable-use steel wires for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and for India's Bombay Bridge. Currently, Baosteel is the only integrated iron and steel producer in China which supplies galvanized steel wires for large-size bridge cables.
