ArcelorMittal plans to lay off steelworkers at the company’s Indiana Harbor steel mill in East Chicago, Indiana, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, according to local news reports.

The company reportedly notified the United Steelworkers union this week that it will idle the Indiana Harbor #3 blast furnace and the Indiana Harbor #4 blast furnace in East Chicago, along with the Cleveland #6 blast furnace. The company will continue operating its other four blast furnaces located in the US.

The company did not disclose how many workers would be affected.
