The authorities in Kazakhstan have implemented a quarantine in several regions of the country as a measure to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Temirtau, the city where the steelmaking plant of ArcelorMittal is located, is among the affected areas.

For now, there has been no official statement from the company about the potential effect of the quarantine on its operations; however, it is possible, taking into account the needed safety measures in regards to labor. In addition, the almost complete stoppage of transport connections in the region may have an effect on the company’s working regime. In the case of some production slowdown, the company may limit its presence in the flats market not only locally, but also in Russia as it is one of the large sellers to the country.

In 2019, ArcelorMittal Temirtau produced 3.2 million mt of steel, down nine percent year on year, SteelOrbis has learned.
