Australian miner Aquila Resources announced on August 19 that the Queensland government has granted the mining lease for the Eagle Downs hard coking coal project in Central Queensland.

The project owned 50 percent by Aquila Coal Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aquila, and 50 percent by Bowen Central Coal Pty Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Brazil-based mining giant Vale, involves construction, development and operation of an underground hard coking coal mine in Queensland's resource-rich Bowen Basin.

When completed, the mine will produce up to 5.1 million mt per year, with an average of 4.5 million mt per year of hard coking coal expected over the initial 10 years of production.
