Liaoning-based Anshan Steel Co., Ltd recently held a ceremony to mark the completion of its Bayuquan project.

Anshan Steel's Bayuquan project involves all fields in metallurgic construction and the entire steel production process, including raw material, sintering, chemicals, iron making, steelmaking, steel rolling and auxiliary facilities. The mill is designed to produce 4.93 million mt of iron, five million mt of steel, two million mt of wide and thick plate and 2.96 million mt of hot rolled coils. Its products include high strength plates, shipbuilding plates, plates for naval vessel use and bridge plates which are of high grade and high added value, aimed at meeting demand for high-quality wide, thick and thin plates from various sectors. Its 5,500 mm wide and thick mill, known as "the king of mills" for having the largest sizes in the world, will be able to meet the special demands placed upon it by the national economy.

The Bayuquan project operates on an area covering 8.32 square kilometers, including 3.27 square kilometers of reclaimed lands. Its production efficiency and utilization rate of land both rank at the top among domestic steel enterprises. Anshan Steel mainly uses Chinese-built machinery, i.e. 96 percent domestic-produced machinery to be precise.

With its large and modern equipment, production at the Bayuquan facilities is environmentally friendly, including the maximization of recycling of all resources, energies and industrial wastes. The facilities generate 56 percent of the electricity they use, while the re-utilization rates of water and solid wastes have reached 97.8 percent and 99.3 percent respectively. In addition, the mill has endeavored to promote the introduction of solar energy, wind energy and new technologies such as sea water desalination.

With the Bayuquan project put into production, Anshan Steel's comprehensive steel production capacity will rise to 21 million mt per year.
