Brazilian mining agency, ANM, said 90 percent of Brazilian upstream mines, including iron ore mines, concluded their decommissioning projects. ANM ordered in August 2019 companies to complete decommissioning projects for all upstream dams, both active and inactive, following the Brumadinho disaster, which killed 259 people.

ANM said there are still an undisclosed number of mines from companies that either filed for bankruptcy or “abandoned” inactive dams.

“These dams need to be decommissioned and they don’t have an owner anymore, which is a risk for the populations. We need to align this discussion between governments to go for (a certain) public intervention,” ANM said.
