Anglo American commissions iron ore mine in South Africa

UK-headquartered mining giant Anglo American has announced that it has commissioned the third of its four major growth projects during 2011.

The new 9 million mt per year Kolomela iron ore mine located in South Africa's Northern Cape has been commissioned five months ahead of schedule. The first shipment of 100,000 mt of lump ore from the mine was made on December 19 to the port of Qingdao in China from the port of Saldanha.

Anglo American expects to increase it South African production to 70 million mt per year by 2019.
