According to insiders at Liaoning Province-based Angang (Group) New Iron & Steel Company, in the second half of 2008 the producer's new steelmaking facilities in Ba Yuquan will put into production with an annual capacity of 6.5 million mt.

Phase one of the project involves a total investment of about RMB 30 billion ($4.2 billion) in facilities which occupy a total area of 8.3 km2. A steel production line with an annual capacity of 6.5 million mt will be built and put into operation, including two million mt of wide and heavy plate and 4.5 million mt of hot rolled plate. After the project is completed, the new facilities will meet the strong demand for special plates such as shipbuilding plate, bridge plate and line pipe plate, as well as for high-end sheet applied in automobiles and in household appliances.

Currently, the main workshops for agglomeration have been constructed, and equipment is being installed. Four coke ovens with a total annual capacity of 2.55 million mt have been established; more than half of the construction work for two 111.4-meter-high blast furnaces has been completed; and the installation of the world's largest 5500 mm wide and heavy plate rolling mill, the so-called "king of rolling mills," has been completed.
