Latin America’s steel association, Alacero, has joined the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Alacero said in a statement. According to the steel association, it joined the UN group as an “observer,” which means Alacero can now be represented within UNCTAD and join the conference meetings. Alacero will also get notifications regarding documents issued for UNCTAD meetings, including its related institutions.

Alacero said both the UNCTAD and the steel association goals “converge” in terms of seeking a “multi-stakeholder cooperation” toward global goals while also reducing inequality.

“We understand the steel industry is intrinsically linked to the progress of collectivity,” Fracisco Leal, director general at Alacero, said in a statement. “A health industry generates jobs, guides the (economic) growth, and takes care of the community,” he said.

Alacero’s admission letter was signed by Arlette Verploegh, who heads UNCTAD’s communications and information department.
