Mexican integrated steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) has welcomed this week the US decision to impose a 25 percent tariff over the exports of steel to the North American country under the Section 232 investigation.

AHMSA chairman Alonso Ancira Elizondo said Mexico should impose “similar” duties to the countries the nation does not have trade agreements with.

The executive said the measure is needed to “avoid” steel exports not allowed in the US flooding the Mexican steel market, generating a “similar distortion” already seen in the past few years.

AHMSA has also echoed Canacero’s warning this week to avoid Mexico being used as a bridge for triangulation so undesired steel exports can reach the US through Mexico.
