Mexican integrated steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) will increase steel output by 25 percent, following the US’ decision to exclude Mexico from Section 232 tariffs.

The president of AHMSA’s board, Alonso Ancira Elizondo, said the tariffs reduced the steelmaker’s output by 100,000 mt. As a result of Mexico’s exclusion, the steelmaker’s capacity will increase by the same amount, or 25 percent.

Elizondo said AHMSA will also invest $40 million at its Hercules unit, which is part of local subsidiary Minosa. The money will be used for AHMSA’s Artemisa project, which will allow the Hercules unit to increase the supply of iron ore concentrate to the company’s blast furnaces by 40 percent.
