Alonso Ancira, Chairman of the Board of Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA), announced this week the formation of a consortium of Mexican steelmakers to participate in the bidding process for the Los Ramones-Cempoala pipeline expansion project.

The expansion will stretch 875 kilometers and pass through the states of Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz; the project is expected to require an investment of US$3 billion.

The steelmakers want pipe for the project to be supplied by Mexican producers. Ancira said that 80 percent of steel pipe used in Mexico are manufactured domestically.
