US HSS prices continue to hang tough

The most commonly heard spot price transaction range for US domestic hollow structural sections (HSS) tubing continues to hold at $50-$51 cwt. ($1102-$1124/mt or $1000-$1020/nt), ex-mill, although sources close to SteelOrbis question how long prices will remain at this level.

“Mills are holding their line for the most part,” a source said. “You can get a little help on pricing, on occasion, but not consistently.”

Another source agrees that prices could soon adjust. “Everyone I’ve talked to that works in distribution is thinking that a downward adjustment is due. I just hasn’t happened yet. If hot rolled coil (HRC) continues to slide there will be extreme pressure on the tube mills to adjust their prices.”
