Earlier this month Nuovo Campsider, the Italian scrap consumers association, had taken note of the slight decreases in local scrap prices recorded in June and said it expected a stable price trend until the beginning of the summer stoppages. Nevertheless, local scrap traders polled by SteelOrbis have reported a price increase of €5/mt at the end of last week. This small increase is attributed by some sources to the need of some operators to replenish their supplies - also in anticipation of the long summer stoppages, while others have attributed them to the fact that some producers had lower purchasing prices compared to others and therefore they wanted to align their prices to the higher levels.
Scrap prices in the local Italian market are now at the following levels:
Quality | Average price (€/mt) |
Turnings (E5) | 225-230 |
HMS (E3) | 270 |
Shredded scrap (E40) | 290 |
Busheling (E8) / (E8C) | 285 / 290-295 |
Prices include delivery and exclude VAT.
According to sources, local scrap prices in Italy should now remain stable until the beginning of the summer holidays. There are no problems in terms of material availability, mostly because activity in the finished product markets is still very slack. Like last year, particularly long stoppages are predicted for the month of August, although local producers may choose to stay away for less than four weeks.
