SteelOrbis has learned that in September domestic scrap prices are expected to remain stable in the Italian market. After the long summer holidays, Italian mills' output volumes have not increased significantly. Meanwhile, in the months of July and August scrap prices had risen by €5/mt ($6/mt) in the domestic market and had also risen by the same margin for imports from Europe, in particular from France and Germany. Currently, Italian steel producers are not eager to buy scrap, because their scrap supplies are more than enough given the lack of consumption and low finished product demand. Therefore, all sources expect that scrap prices will not change in the Italian market this month.
Meanwhile, domestic scrap traders continue to face low scrap collection, strong competition, delayed payments from mills and increasingly compressed profit margins.
Scrap prices in the local Italian market are now at the following levels:
Quality | Average price (€/mt) |
Turnings (E5) | 232-235 ($299-303/mt) |
HMS (E3) | 280 ($361/mt) |
Shredded scrap (E40) | 295 ($381/mt) |
Busheling (E8) / (E8C) | 285-295 (368-381/mt) |
Prices include delivery and exclude VAT.
