During the week ending September 19, steel scrap prices in the Chinese market have been stable in most regions, though prices in Liupanshui and Anyang have increased, while prices in Zhangjiagang have decreased. Transaction activity in the overall market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average scrap prices in China’s main markets are presented in the following table.
During the given week, quality scrap has been in short supply in some regions, resulting in rises in prices in those regions. Meanwhile, many steelmakers have been carrying out maintenance work due to environmental protection measures, thereby exerting a negative impact on the scrap market. It is thought that scrap prices will likely move sideways in the coming week, while steelmakers will likely build up scrap inventories ahead of the National Day Holiday (October 1-8).
