Trading still on low side in Chinese domestic semi-finished steel market

During the week ending September 8, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China have seen various trends, with semi-finished steel prices in Jiangsu and Hebei remaining stable week on week, while slight rises have been seen in prices in Shanxi. Transaction activity in the overall market has been better than in the previous week, though remaining at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.

During the given week, some traders have increased their semi-finished steel prices in a move aimed at providing support for the stability of semi-finished steel prices, while some other traders have chosen to decrease their sales prices due to their pessimism as regards the future prospects for the market. Currently, although the finished steel market has entered what is supposed to be its traditional peak season, finished steel prices have not seen any significant improvement as market participants are worried about the slowdown in China's economy. Such concerns have exerted a negative impact on semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely edge down slightly in the coming week.
