During the week ending June 7, Chinese domestic slab prices have decreased and domestic billet prices have declined in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, though remaining stable in other regions, while transaction activity in the overall market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, steelmakers have been unwilling to sell semi-finished steel since they consider prices to be low levels. Meanwhile, due to the weakness in the finished steel market, rolling mills have not been eager to buy semi-finished steel. Accordingly, transaction activity in the semi-finished steel market has been slack. Since the Dragon Boat Festival Holiday (June 9-12) is approaching, it is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
