Increased optimism in Chinese domestic semi-finished steel market

Tuesday, 18 August 2015 13:54:28 (GMT+3)   |   Shanghai

During the week ending August 18, domestic semi-finished steel prices in China have generally indicated a declining trend, though billet prices have remained stable in the provinces of Jiangsu and Fujian. Transaction activity in the overall market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.

During the given week, some steelmakers have decreased their semi-finished steel prices to stimulate sales activities. Since the offseason for the finished steel market will soon be over, optimism prevails as regard the prospects for the performance of the domestic semi-finished and finished steel markets in the coming period. It is thought that in the week ahead semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market are unlikely to soften further, but instead may indicate some minor upticks.
